Filora, and why it exists

Filora is an artisan textile house by Eightara Creations Pvt Ltd. The name comes from filo — thread — and the idea that a thread carries more than it appears to: a technique, a lineage, a household's income, three hundred years of somebody's grandmother.

India's craft clusters are not short of skill. They are short of access. An embroiderer in Lucknow can work at a level that no machine approaches, and still earn less than the person who drives the cloth to the buyer. The gap is not one of talent. It is one of distance.

We are trying to close that distance. Buy directly, name the maker, price the hours honestly, and put the work in front of people who will recognise what it is.

What we hold ourselves to

Preserve the craft
A technique survives only while someone is still paid to practise it. Chikankari has thirty-two stitches; the market currently rewards about six. We commission the rest deliberately.
Pay the maker
Direct purchase, rates set against hours worked, and the artisan's name on the product page. Recognition is part of the payment.
Open the market
Work of this standard should not be confined to the city it is made in. We handle the distance so the artisan does not have to.

We find the cluster
Lucknow first, for Chikankari. We go to the workshops, not to the export houses.
We design together
The artisan tells us what the technique can and cannot do. The design follows the craft, not the other way round.
It is made by hand
By hand, over days. A piece passes through several pairs of hands before it is finished.
